Why choose a Midi file ?

M.I.D.I or nothing

Why choose a Midi filerather than a MP3 one?
Let's answer that questionwith some other questions :

With an audio file, can you even... :

  • Slow down and speed up the tempo however you want to without changing the pitch ?
  • Transpose either bits or a whole file of yours however you want to without altering the sound of yourfile?
  • Remove any instrument of your choice and put it back whenever you want ?
  • Change the sound of an instrument, from a simple variation in timbre to the complete make over of the instrument itself ?
  • Remix your track from top to toe instrument by instrument ?
  • Release (with some practice) remarkable scores, instrument by instrument ?

Then, make a significant step forward and become a real conductor !

What kind of quality can you expect from a Midi file ?

Let's answer this other question with yet another question : how is a Midi file created ?

On the one hand you have a musician (actually this 'musician' is a mere amateur most of the time), that is a set of two ears and two hands with ten fingers each, and on the other hand you have a machine.
This musician will have many a listen to a particular song and will play every single bit of it.This eventually leads to a cover version of the original song the quality of which is directly derived from the quality of the so-called musician's ears and their musical skills (namely pure technique, knowledge of the different styles they have come across...).

The man will interact with the machine by making it :
- take a given note and play it on a Midi channel, with a specific sound (an instrument), a special nuance, etc...
- take another note and assign it another instrument, etc.

At the end of the process you get a Midi file whose quality is linked to two key elements :

1- The sound quality : depending on the machine that plays the Midi file !
For instance, on this home page are two demos :

-  a midi file the quality of which will depend on the quality of your sound card (quite often that's not so good!) or the quality of the external synthesizer (or any sound module) connected to your computer (obviously that's much better!). Mind you, if you are an informed musician the quality will depend on the amount of time you are going to spend assigning each Midi channel virtual instruments, effects...then mixing the whole (you've never been so close to the highest quality, congratulations!).

- an audio file ((note that its size is 6 Mo) that displays the same Midi file (or rather its spitting image) played by a sound module of acceptable quality (Roland SC880).

CAN YOU HEAR THE DIFFERENCE ? Of course...

2 - The purely musical quality : directly born of the musical abilities of the person who has made the Midi file !!

Now, two cases to be considered
 !!

a - the Midifile quality is quite bad, not to say deprived of whatever value notion there is in this world. Well, you can easily bet that this file has been made by aso-called 'musician' who gives it to every Tom, Dick and Harry for pleasure (if not for their own pleasure)

b - the Midi file quality is pretty good if not excellent! Obviously it has been made by a pro. The quarantee of this quality is the fact you've paid for the file, on our site for instance. There's no way you could ever find a Midi file of such high quality for free. If so, it's undoubtedly nothing but a pirate version and it was originally meant to be sold. Just think about it. What kind of musician would spend whole days working at making quality files in order to give it all away??).

Conclusion :

Please respect other's work, and respect yourself :
- buy the midi files you're using

- keep them to yourself !

Whether you share, give away or resell a Midi file, you're taking part in the social massacre of all the musicians, singers and artists who work hard to bring you quality material and try to earn a living through their art.
